Exploring the Philosophy of Self
Exploring the Philosophy of Self
Pay What you Want! (This allows us meet our accessibility and diversity goals.)
Age: High School
Meets on Zoom on Tuesday, Sept 1, 3:00-4:00pm Pacific Time (6pm Eastern).
Led by Asia Baclay, a San Francisco State University junior in Philosophy and Religion, and co-hosted by Paradox Lab founder, Dr. Iris Oved.
In this one-session online discussion class, students will explore what is necessary and sufficient for you to be YOU. We will start with Bernard Williams’ thought experiment in which he describes taking two people, a person A and B, and swaps their mind and memories (placing the mind of A into B and vice versa). If person A’s memories or experience are transferred into person B’s body, is person B now identified as person A or no? We will then go on to explore which aspects of the mind are essential to the persistence of the self. Students will use an Inquiry Diagram (shown to the right) to map their ideas.
Refund Policy: Full refund up to 48 hours prior to first session.
****Note: For this class to work, we must have at minimum 3 students enrolled. If this minimum is not reached by 48 hours prior to the first session, we will cancel and issue a full refund.
