Ages 8-14. Family members are welcome to observe!

Meets on Zoom, Sunday January 17, 11am-noon Pacific Time (2pm Eastern).

Led by Paradox Lab founder, Dr. Iris Oved.

This is a one-session online discussion class about rules in games and the roles of skill and chance in determining their outcomes. Why does losing hurt so much? Why does it make us feel like the rules were unfair? What does it mean to lose gracefully? This class was inspired by an episode of the podcast, Two Guys On Your Head, hosted by Drs. Art Markman and Bob Duke of UT Austin, which was recorded on January 6th during the insurrection of the US Capitol: https://www.npr.org/podcasts/381443482/two-guys-on-your-head. The session will begin with observations about board games, sports, and other competitions, exploring the roles of skill and chance in the examples. Students will then share their own experiences with losing games and we will discuss what it means when somebody loses. In the last 20 minutes, we will have a formal discussion using the Inquiry Diagram shown on this page to explore the question, When is it appropriate to challenge the rules of a game?

Refund Policy: Full refund for the class up to 48 hours prior start of the session.

****Note: For this class to work, we must have at minimum 3 students enrolled. If this minimum is not reached by 48 hours prior to the session, we will cancel and issue a full refund.
